Termites vs Ants: How to Tell the Difference in Your UAE Home

To tell termites from ants, look at three things: the antennae, the waist and the wings. Termites have straight antennae, a thick waist and two pairs of wings of equal length. Ants have elbowed antennae, a narrow pinched waist and front wings longer than the back pair. It matters because ants are mostly a nuisance, while termites quietly eat into the timber in your home.

Are those flying ants or termite swarmers?

Both ants and termites produce winged adults that fly out to start new colonies, often around lights and windows. Catch one and look closely. A termite swarmer looks evenly thick from head to tail, with straight, bead-like antennae and long wings that are all the same size and extend well past the body.

A flying ant has a clear three-part body with a pinched waist, bent antennae and wings of two different sizes. Termites also shed their wings soon after landing, so piles of identical loose wings on sills are a strong termite sign.

What other signs point to termites rather than ants?

Termites avoid open air, so you rarely see them walking around the way ants do. Instead you see the evidence: pencil-thin mud tubes running up walls or foundations, skirting or door frames that sound hollow when tapped, blistered or bubbling paint on wood, and doors that suddenly stick.

Ants leave trails you can see, often heading to food, and may push out small piles of soil or sand from nests in gardens and paving joints. They don't eat wood.

Why does the difference matter?

Because the treatments are completely different. Ants are dealt with by colony baiting that the workers carry back to the nest. Termites call for a soil barrier around the foundation, bait stations, or direct injection into active galleries, depending on the building and how far the activity has spread.

Spraying ant killer on a termite problem does nothing to the colony underground and can delay the treatment you actually need, while the damage carries on behind the walls.

What should I do if I think it's termites?

Don't break open mud tubes or spray them, because that disturbs the colony and makes the activity harder to track. Take photos, keep a few wings or insects in a sealed bag, and book an inspection. Villas with gardens and ground-floor timber, particularly in Al Ain, are most at risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do termites bite people?

No. Termites aren't a health threat to people. The risk is the damage they do to timber, furniture and stored goods.

I found wings on my windowsill. Is that termites?

If the wings are all the same size and there are many of them, it's likely termite swarmers. Keep a few in a bag and book an inspection.

Can you protect a new villa before termites arrive?

Yes. We offer preventive termite programmes, including soil treatment for new builds and bait stations for existing villas.
