Are Cockroaches Coming From Your Drain? How to Tell and Stop Them
Yes. If you're seeing large, reddish-brown cockroaches in the bathroom or near the kitchen floor drain, especially after dark, they are very likely coming up from the drain. These are usually American cockroaches, which live in sewer and drain lines and climb up when the water seal in the trap dries out. The fix starts with the drain itself.
How can I tell if cockroaches are coming from the drain?
Look at the size and the place. Drain cockroaches are big, often longer than your thumb, and turn up in bathrooms, laundry rooms and near kitchen floor drains. They appear mostly at night and run when the light goes on. Small light-brown cockroaches inside kitchen cabinets are a different species that lives indoors, and they need a different treatment.
A simple test: cover the drain with a plate or tape at night. If you stop seeing them, the drain was the way in.
Why do they come up through the drain?
Every floor drain has a trap that holds a little water and blocks the drain line. In the UAE heat that water evaporates quickly in a guest bathroom, a maid's room or a flat that has been empty over the summer. Once the trap is dry, there's an open path from the drain line into your home.
Loose or broken grates, gaps around the pipe where it comes through the floor and blocked drains that hold food waste also invite them in.
How do I stop cockroaches coming from the drain?
• Run water into every floor drain, including ones you never use, at least twice a week. • Fit closed or fine-mesh drain covers, and close shower drains at night. • Seal gaps around pipes where they enter the floor or wall. • Clean drains regularly so grease and food don't build up inside. • Before travelling, cover drains or ask someone to run the water while you're away.
Don't pour strong chemicals or insecticide down the drain. It rarely reaches the cockroaches living further down the line, and some products damage pipes.
When should you call a professional?
• You still see large cockroaches after sealing and running the drains for a week or two. • They appear in several bathrooms, or in the kitchen as well. • Other flats in the building have the same problem. • You also find small cockroaches in the kitchen cabinets. • You run a restaurant, shop or building where drains serve many units.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can cockroaches come up through the toilet?
It's uncommon, because the toilet bowl holds a deep water seal. Floor drains and shower drains are a far more likely route.
Why do I see them more in summer?
Heat dries out drain traps faster, and many homes are left empty while families travel, so drains go unused for weeks.
Is a drain cockroach a sign my home is dirty?
No. These cockroaches live in the drain line outside your home. A dry trap or open drain lets them in regardless of how clean the house is.
