Tiny Black Bugs in the Kitchen, Rice or Flour: What They Are and What to Do
Tiny black or brown bugs inside a bag of rice, flour, oats or spices are almost always stored-food pests: weevils or small pantry beetles that arrived in a pack from the shop and bred in your cupboard. They are a nuisance, not a danger, and you can usually clear them yourself in an afternoon. If the tiny bugs are running across the worktop instead, look closer, because ants and baby cockroaches look similar at first glance.
What are the tiny bugs in my rice and flour?
Weevils are small dark beetles with a long snout, common in rice, wheat and whole grains. Flour beetles are reddish-brown and live in flour, semolina and cake mixes. Other small beetles get into spices, dried chillies, dates, pet food and even dried flowers. You may also see fine webbing or clumping in flour, which points to moth larvae.
They come in with the food. Eggs inside grain are invisible, so a pack can look fine when you buy it and be full of adults a few weeks later, especially in a warm kitchen.
Are the tiny bugs on my worktop the same thing?
Not always. Watch how they move. Tiny insects marching in a line to a spot of sugar are ants. Tiny, fast, light-brown insects that run into gaps when you turn on the light are baby German cockroaches, and they mean a breeding colony nearby. Pantry beetles move slowly and stay near the food they came from.
Small flying insects around the bin or fruit bowl are usually fruit flies or drain flies, which breed in overripe fruit, wet bins and drains.
How do I get rid of bugs in the pantry?
• Check every open pack of grain, flour, pasta, spices, nuts, dates and pet food. Bin anything with live insects, webbing or clumps, sealed in a bag. • Empty the cupboard, vacuum corners, shelf edges and hinges, then wipe with warm soapy water and let it dry fully. • Store dry food in airtight glass or hard plastic containers, not the original bag. • Buy smaller packs you'll finish quickly, and check new packs before putting them away. • Some families freeze new rice or flour for a few days before storing it.
Insecticide sprays don't belong near food shelves and won't solve the problem. Removing the infested food does.
When should you call a professional?
• The bugs are back within a few weeks of a full clear-out. • You find them in several cupboards or rooms, not just one shelf. • The tiny bugs are fast-moving and hide in gaps, which suggests baby cockroaches. • Ants are trailing into the kitchen every day. • You run a restaurant, bakery or food store and need records for inspectors.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to eat rice that had weevils in it?
Most people throw it away, and that is the safest choice. Infested food is unpleasant and may be spoiled, and keeping it lets the insects spread to other packs.
Do bay leaves keep weevils away?
It's a popular tip, but it won't stop an infestation. Airtight containers and checking packs when you buy them work far better.
Can pantry bugs spread to the rest of the house?
They usually stay near dry food, but they can move between cupboards. If you see them in bedrooms or wardrobes, it may be a different insect, so book an inspection.
