Is Pest Control Safe for Kids and Pets? A UAE Parent's Guide

Yes. Professional pest control is safe for children and pets when the company uses municipality-approved, low-toxicity products and applies them in the right places. Most indoor treatments today rely on gel baits and sealed bait stations rather than room-wide spraying, so there is very little exposure. The rest comes down to a few simple precautions on the day, which we cover below.

What makes a treatment family-safe?

Three things: the product, the method and the placement. Licensed companies in Abu Dhabi use products approved by the municipality. A good technician then picks the least invasive method that will work, such as gel bait in cabinet hinges for cockroaches or colony bait for ants, instead of spraying floors where a toddler crawls.

Placement matters as much as the product. Bait goes deep into cracks, behind appliances and inside tamper-resistant stations, where children and pets can't reach it.

Do we need to leave the house during treatment?

For most gel-bait treatments, no. You only need to keep everyone away from the rooms being treated while the technician works. For treatments that involve spraying, such as some bed bug or flying-insect jobs, the technician will ask you to keep children and pets out of the treated area until it is dry and has been ventilated.

The ventilation time depends on the product and the room, so ask your technician on the day. At Friends we tell you exactly which rooms to avoid and for how long before we leave.

How do I protect cats, dogs, birds and fish?

Tell us about every pet when you book. Cats and dogs should stay in an untreated room or outside while we work. Birds are sensitive to airborne products, so move cages to another room and keep them there until the treated area has been aired. Cover fish tanks and switch off the air pump for the duration of any spray treatment.

Pick up pet bowls, beds and toys before the visit and wash bowls before refilling them. Afterwards, don't let pets lick treated skirting or chew on bait stations.

What should I ask the pest control company?

Ask which products they will use and whether they are municipality-approved, which method they recommend and why, which rooms you need to avoid and for how long, and whether you'll get a written report. A company that can't answer these clearly isn't one to let into a home with small children.

Friends has been treating family homes in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain since 2003. Every visit ends with a written report, so you know what was used and where.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is pest control safe during pregnancy?

Tell us when you book. We'll choose bait-based methods where possible and advise you to stay out of treated rooms until they are dry and aired. If you have specific health concerns, check with your doctor too.

Can my baby sleep in a treated room the same night?

After a gel-bait treatment, usually yes. After a spray treatment, wait until the room is dry and aired. Your technician will tell you when it's ready.

Do you use the same products in homes and restaurants?

We use municipality-approved products in both and pick the method for the setting, from bait in homes to scheduled programmes with documentation for food businesses.
