In Abu Dhabi, ants are not only a villa problem. On the upper floors of apartment buildings in areas such as Al Nahyan and Al Reem Island, very small ants nest in wall voids and behind tiles, and come out through sockets, skirting and gaps around bathroom fittings. In villas, new turf, potted plants or palms brought in from a nursery can carry a colony into the garden.

Activity usually rises in the hottest months, when ants come indoors for water at sinks, shower drains and AC condensate lines, and again after any change to irrigation. Some ants feed on sweet food and others on grease or protein, and each takes a different bait, so it helps to note what they are eating.

Before the visit, photograph the trail or leave a short stretch untouched, and avoid spraying so the ants keep using the route we need to follow. Keep sugar, honey and pet food in sealed containers. Call if ants appear in sockets or switchboards, in a baby's room, or keep coming back within days of cleaning.
